Doris (Roberts) Curless, 86, was ushered into heaven on July 14th, 2019, greeted by the love of her life husband James (Jim) Curless-married 41 years; beloved son Malcolm Smith of New York City, NY, sister Isabelle “Ding” Flanagan of Ridgeley, WV; brothers Charles Allen Roberts of Lowell, IN; Frank Dale Roberts and Don Roberts both of Hendricks, WV; as well as two grandsons Luke Holm-Hanson and Corey Holm-Hanson.
Doris is survived by son, Raymond (Denise) Smith; step son Tim (Janet) Curless; step daughter Cindy Curless, 8 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and 2 great, great grandchildren. Doris is also survived by her treasured sisters CarolSue Carr and Mary “Moosie” Bowley both of Hendricks, WV; adored Aunt Betty Sue (Beck) Lake of Northeast, PA.
Doris was born in Hendricks, West Virginia, graduating from Parsons High School in 1950. Shortly after she moved to Indiana, settling in Lowell as her life-long home in 1957. Doris was faithful to her West Virginia heritage-always receiving her weekly hometown newspaper so that she could continue to keep in touch with the community, and her friends. Doris loved her trips back to the beautiful mountains of West Virginia for the annual July Lindsey/Roberts Family Reunion in which she planned for months in advance, by tracking family heritage, creating scrapbooks which chronicled the reunions and current family achievements, as well as planning games for young and old which included the always popular duck race.
Doris was a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church of Lowell. Doris loved the Lord and dedicated her life to live like Jesus through volunteering through the church and in her community. Most notably, Doris spent more than 31 years at Saint Anthony’s Hospital in Crown Point, logging more than 25,000 volunteer hours. She was named 1st United Methodist Woman of the Year and the Lowell Labor Day Woman of the Year for serving her community in so many ways.
Doris’ passion and gift was a personal card ministry in which she sent out at least 5 cards per day for Birthdays, Anniversaries, illness, marriages, births, as an outreach in others’ lives.
Visitation was held at Sheets Funeral Home in Lowell on Wednesday, July 17t from 4 to 8 p.m. The funeral was held at Lowell First United Methodist on Thursday, July 18 at 11 a.m. with internment following at West Creek Cemetery.
