Hazel Colene Shaffer Kelley

Hazel Colene Shaffer Kelley, age 96 years, a native of Parsons, WV and more recently a resident of Boonsboro, MD, departed this life early Wednesday morning, April 2, 2014 at the home of her granddaughter in Keedysville, MD, with her family at her side.

HazelKelleyShe was born Friday, June 22, 1917 at Parsons, WV, a daughter of the late Ira Francis and Mona Binia Cross Shaffer.  On June 24, 1939, she was married to Vernon B. Kelley, who preceded her in death May 20, 1968.  On May 5, 1978, she was married to Leon W. “Buck” Kelley, who preceded her in death October 5, 1991.

Surviving are one son, Vernon “Roger” Kelley and wife Rosita of Beeville, TX; one step daughter, Judy Kelley Melody and husband Mike of Keyser, WV; six grandchildren, Sandra, Roger, Jeanneina, Norma, John and JoAnna; eighteen great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.

She is the last surviving member of her immediate family having been preceded in death by two brothers, The Rev. J.D. Shaffer and Alfred Shaffer and two sisters, Gladys Shaffer Bonner and Geraldine Shaffer Dize.

She was a graduate of Parsons High School with the Class of 1935.  She was an employee of the former A&P Store and she was a seamstress.   She was a sales clerk and worked in the office for the Kresge Store at Washington DC, and retired from the Kresge Store in Rockville, MD, where she retired.  She was a member of the Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ in Boonsboro, MD and a former member of St. John’s United Methodist Church of Parsons, WV.  Hazel enjoyed the outdoors, gardening, growing flowers, animals and was an avid cook.  She loved to spend time with her family, especially the grandchildren.

The family received friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Saturday from 12:30 until 2 p.m., the funeral hour.  The Rev. Don Stevenson officiated and interment followed at the Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons, WV.  The Lohr & Barb Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements for Hazel Colene Shaffer Kelley.  Condolences may be expressed to the family at; www.lohrbarbfuneralhome.com.
