Jesse James Summerfield, Sr., age 92 years, a resident of Hendricks, WV, and more recently a resident of Cortland Acres at Thomas, WV, departed this life Thursday morning, September 17, 2015 at Cortland Acres. He had been in declining health.
He was born Sunday, May 20, 1923 at Parsons, WV, a son of the late Buar Garet and Maggie Gaye Taylor Summerfield. On August 22, 1959 at Parsons, WV, he was married to the former Geneva Belle Alderman, who preceded him in death.
Surviving are one son, Jessie James Summerfield and wife Louanna of Hendricks; one granddaughter, Jessica Lynn Vandevander and husband Timothy of Pheasant Run; and one great grandson, Corie Vandevander.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family having been preceded in death by four brothers, Floyd Lennis, Benjamin, Ollen, Patrick Ray; and seven sisters, Sylvia Marie, Urcie Pauline, Leona Belle, Juanita Ellen, Dora Gene, Venora may and Myrna Lenora.
He attended the one room Peddit School at Pheasant Run. He was a Veteran of the Unites States Air Force serving during World War II. He worked in the oil fields, driving truck carrying pipe lines. He was an employee of the former Dorman Mills until its closing, a former employee of Hinchcliff Lumber Co., and retired from the United States Forest Service. Jesse enjoyed fishing, woodcutting and gardening.
To honor Jesse’s wishes, a private family and friends gathering will be held at the funeral home parlor and cremation will then follow.
