Joan Elizabeth Matthews

Joan Elizabeth Matthews, 70, passed away May 4, 2014 at Cortland Acres.  She was born December 9, 1943 at Davis, WV , a daughter of the late Charles Ray Barnes and Louristine Arretta (Durr) Barnes.

Mrs. Matthews was formerly married to Ed Matthews, who preceded her in death, also preceding her in death were two brothers, Thomas Bradley Barnes and Jerry Lee Barnes, Sr. and one sister, Donna Drue Kisner.  She is survived by  four brothers, Charles “Sonny” (Diane) Barnes, Sheffield Lake, OH, Bob Barnes, Davis, WV, Larry (Kathy) Barnes, Nitro, WV, Jeff (Barbara) Barnes, Davis, WV, four sisters; Delores (Paul) Sisler, Morgantown, WV, Connie (Kenneth) Whitehair, Davis, WV, Sharon (Hallie) Oxley, Parkersburg, WV, Patti Barnes, Clarksburg, WV, and  several nieces and nephews.

Joan loved spending time with family, she loved animals, and enjoyed painting (she had painted several paintings).  Mrs. Matthews lived in Las Vegas for several years before returning home to live. She had been employed by Canaan Valley  Resort Lodge,  as a reservation clerk before retiring.

Friends were received May 7, 2014 from 2 to 8 p.m. at Hinkle Funeral Home.  At the request of the deceased her remains will be cremated and  graveside services will be held at a later date.
