John Carl Mauzy, age 88 years, a resident of Parsons, WV departed this life Monday, November 24, 2014 at the Monongalia General Hospital at Morgantown, WV. He had been in declining health.

He was born Sunday, January 21, 1926 at Cass, WV, a son of the late Michael “Mike” and Hattie Susan Vance Mauzy.  On June 27, 1955 at Oakland, Md, he was married to the former Erma Lea Filler, who preceded him in death, December 11, 2011.  They had celebrated fifty – six years of marriage.

Surviving are two brothers, Paul Stanley Mauzy, Sr., Richard Farres Mauzy and one sister, Mary Catherine Mauzy, all of Parsons; one brother-in-law, John Filler and one sister – in -law, Margaret Harlow, both of Parsons; several nieces and nephews and his best friend Daris Alkire.

Preceding him in death is one sister, Virginia Alice Mauzy.

He attended Parsons High School and Davis & Elkins College.  He was a Veteran of the United States Navy during World War II.  He worked at the West Virginia Dept. of Highways and the Mauzy’s Meat Market of Parsons.  He was a former employee of the American Snuff Company for several years.  John was instrumental in obtaining funding for Cortland Acres at Thomas, WV and was one of the first members of the Board of Directors for Cortland Acres. He was also instrumental in the Head Start Program and Housing for the less fortunate. He was a master carpenter, an avid gardener and a noted fan of all sports.

The family received friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m.  Final rites were conducted at the funeral home parlor on Saturday, November 29, 2014 at 1:30 p.m.  The Rev. James Snyder and The Rev. Larry Filler officiated and interment followed at the Parsons City Cemetery at Parsons, WV, where the H.W. Daniels Post #29 American Legion, the Tygart Valley Post #3647 Veterans of Foreign War and the Tucker County Veterans Association conducted full military honors. The Lohr & Barb Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements for John Carl Mauzy.
