Mary Mildred “Moosie” Roberts Winton Bowley, 86, a resident of Hendricks went home to be with the Lord Monday, May 27, 2024, surrounded by her loving family at Garrett Regional Medical Center. She had been in declining health however death was unexpected.
Mary was born November 26, 1937, in Hendricks, WV. She was the daughter of the late Charles Ashton and Mildred Alice Lindsey Roberts. She was married to James Frank Bowley, who survives. Left to cherish her memory are her four sons James Frank Bowley II of Hendricks, WV, Scott Wesley Bowley (Sarah) of Parsons, WV, Robin Tracy Bowley (Kim) of Hambleton, WV, Todd Allen Bowley (Missy) of Hendricks, WV, and a special friend Nita Upton of Oakland, MD.
Mawmaw had ten grandchildren and six great grandchildren of whom she adored. Sheree (Brian), Aasta (Micah), Mariah (Derek), Joshua, Isaac, Scottie (Douglas), Adrianna (Michael), Abrielle (Tyler), Zachary, and Lyndsay. Great grandchildren Luke, Titus, Eli, Jaxson, Aria, and Ivanna.
Preceding her in death were her three sisters, Carol Sue Carr, Isabelle “Ding” Flanagan, and Doris Curless; and three brothers, Charles Allen Roberts, Frank Dale Roberts, and Don Roberts. Late husband Ernie Winton.
Mary graduated from Parsons High School Class of 1955. She attended and graduated cosmetology school in Martinsburg, WV. Mary opened her own salon and practiced as a beautician for 69 years. Mary was also a homemaker and served as a campground host for the US Forest Service.
Mary “Mawmaw” was known in the community for her devotion to serving others, generosity, and selflessness. She was a member of the Hendricks United Methodist Church since she was a child. She was also a member and served as President of the Hendricks United Methodist Women for many years. Mary’s legacy of hand knitted prayer shawls, hats/scarves, food and flower delivery, visiting shut ins, and global mission work will be remembered forever. She was a longtime volunteer at Cortland Acres Nursing Home and was recognized by WV Activity Professionals Association as Volunteer of the Year in 2015. Mary was a firm believer of sharing her love of Jesus and spent her life helping others.
Mary had a great love for camping, knitting, quilting, gardening, swimming, crafting and thrifting, blue grass music, and her family. She was known for her RV and spending her summers at Camp Horseshoe with her grandchildren. Mary “Mawmaw” was an amazing mother, grandmother, mentor, and friend. Her spunky personality and kindness will never be forgotten.
Mary’s request for cremation was honored. A celebration of her life is planned for June 8, 2024 at 11 am at the Hendricks Community Church. Service will be led by Pastor VJ Davis. Memorial donations in memory of Mary can be made to the Hendricks Community Church, PO Box 50 Hendricks, WV 26271.
