Maxine Alice Vanscoy Morrison, 93, of the Pheasant Run Community, Randolph County, went home to be with her Savior in mid-afternoon Saturday, September 8, 2018, surrounded by her four children.
Mrs. Morrison was born Sunday, February 22, 1925, in Kerens, a daughter of the late Floyd Leslie Vanscoy and Winnie Lee Sell Vanscoy. On March 4, 1947, in Parsons, she married Eugene Ray Morrison who preceded her in death on September 8, 2001. They had celebrated fifty-four years of marriage when Eugene passed away.
Left to cherish Mrs. Morrison’s memory are two sons, Floyd Morrison and wife, Jean of Parsons, Kenneth Morrison at home, two daughters, Carolyn Jo Canfield and husband, Ward of Kerens, and Lois Jean Arbogast and husband Harold of Parsons, four grandchildren, Melissa Canfield of Mebane, NC, Timothy Canfield and wife, Mandy of Bunker Hill, Diana Poling and husband, Jim of Athens, AL, and Amy Bolyard and husband, Brian of Independence, nine great-grandchildren, Logan Evans and Ariana Chan of Mebane, NC, Cash Canfield and Dane Canfield of Bunker Hill, Sarah, Nathaniel and Jonathan Poling of Athens, Al., Hunter, Jadon, Lily, and Ava Bolyard of Independence, and one sister, Mabel Phares of Elkins.
Mrs Morrison attended the elementary schools of Randolph County and graduated from Elkins High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Davis and Elkins Collage with a BA degree in Elementary Education. She had earned several hours toward a Masters Degree. She taught thirty-eight and one half years in the elementary schools of Randolph and Tucker Counties. She taught in a one room school, grades 1 thru 8 at Pheasant Run, in a one room school, grades 1 thru 6 at Kerens, and 1st grade at Parsons Grade School from 1965 until retirement in 1989. While teaching, she was a member of TCEA, WVEA, and NEA.
She was a member of Israel Church until her marriage and then transferred membership to Farmers Chapel, where she was treasurer until its closing. She became a charter member of the original Riverview Chapel in Porterwood. She served as treasurer of Riverview Chapel from its founding in 1967 until May 2010.
She enjoyed gardening, canning, and being with her family.
Visitation was held at Hostetler Funeral Home in Parsons on Tuesday from 5 until 8 p.m. Funeral services were held from the funeral home chapel on Wednesday, September 12, 2018 at 1 p.m. Rev. Keith Carr officiated, and interment followed at Israel Church Cemetery in Kerens.
