Vernon Allen Shahan, Sr., age 93 years, a resident of St. George, WV, and former Post Master, departed this life Wednesday morning, July 23, 2014 at Cortland Acres at Thomas, WV.
He was born Saturday, May 14, 1921 at St. George, WV, a son of the late Cyrus Walter and Aleta C. Phillips Shahan. On August 24, 1940 at Red House, MD, he was married to the former Mary Virginia Painter, who preceded him in death December 8, 2003.
Surviving are one son, Vernon Allen “Butch” Shahan, Jr. and wife Sally of Akron, OH; one brother, Donald B. Shahan of Hagerstown, MD; one sister, Juanita S. Blackburn of Falls Church, VA; five grandchildren, fourteen great- grandchildren and four great great- grandchildren.
Preceding him in death are one daughter, Mary Yvonne Minear; four brothers, Michael E. Shahan, Harry David Shahan, Robert Shahan and infant Blondel Shahan; three sisters, Alena Owens, Gladys Luzier and Icy Sampson; and one great great- grandson, Cyrus Charles Hughes.
He was a graduate of the St. George Academy and Parsons High School with the Class of 1939. He attended John Hopkins University of Maryland, West Virginia University and Davis & Elkins College. He was a Veteran of the United States Army during World War II, and worked at the Glenn L. Martin Airplane Plant. He worked for the United States Postal Service, retiring after forty years of service. He was a member of the Parsons Church of God, Parsons High School Alumni Association, the National Association of Postmasters of U.S.A, President of the St. George Academy Preservation Society, and a former member of the Parsons Kiwanis Club and Board of Directors of the Tucker County Senior Citizens.
The family received friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons on Saturday, July 26, 2014 from 5 to 7 p.m.. On Saturday at 7 p.m., at the funeral home parlor, the funeral service was conducted by The Rev. Dave Snyder. Mr. Shahan’s request for cremation was honored.
