Contractor or Handyman?

Letter to the Editor:

Something everyone should know when you hire a contractor or handyman is that there are two different licenses.  A contractor has to take a test, be insured and licensed with the WV Contractor Licensing Board and must display license and number.

Handyman license is anyone who does odd jobs up to the amount of $2,500 and no insurance.  If they get hurt on your property while doing work for you, the homeowner is responsible.  Handyman can sue you, he can be working under the table, pays his helpers under the table and pays no state or federal taxes.

If anyone has had a handyman do work for them and it was shoddy, incomplete, left a mess or more than $2,500, you need to call The Attorney General at 304-558-8986 or 1-800-368-8808; The Better Business Bureau at 330-454-9401 or1-800-362-0491 fax 330-456-8957; The WV Contractor Licensing Board at304-558-7890 and tell them you have a problem with the company or person. You need to ask for a complaint form to be sent to you.
