I heard my first cricket chirping this past weekend and the old saying is after the first chirp it is six weeks until the first frost. I am not ready for that yet. Momma Said, “The frost will soon be on the punkin.”
I think we are finally getting our summertime weather. The temperatures are not so boiling hot and the rain has seemed to stop for a time. I just hate that the western part of our country is so dry. The wildfires are out of control. Momma Said, “Our heartfelt prayers go out to the families of the fallen fire fighters.” They were so young and doing something they loved to do.
When someone so young dies it seems a very harsh part of reality, but God has a plan for them that is bigger than anything we can comprehend. I know that doesn’t help ease the pain, but just to know they are in a much better place should ease the mind a bit.
The fall fairs in the area are all ramping up for some good ole fun so if you are in the area, go support your local 4-H and FFA kids in their efforts with their fair animals. The West Virginia State Fair seems to have been a great success. My niece and her good friend took some very prestigious awards with the animals they took this year. Momma Said, “Congratulations to both of them.”
Speaking of the fair, here is a great recipe to try at home. I hope you enjoy
MOMMA’S FAIR FUNNEL CAKES
INGREDIENTS
3eggs
¼ cup sugar
2cups milk
3 2⁄3cups flour
1⁄2teaspoon salt
2teaspoons baking powder

Beat eggs and sugar together and then add the milk slowly–beat. Add the dry ingredients and beat until smooth and creamy.
In a large cast iron pot, add 2 inches of oil to the bottom.
When the oil becomes hot, Pour batter into a funnel and at the same time plug the hole at bottom with you finger, move your hand over the pot and slowly release your finger so the batter can start cooking.
Move the funnel around to make designs.

Top with brown sugar, or honey, or cinnamon sugar, or powdered sugar as a topping.
