The Parsons Advocate

I had a lady send in a letter to the editor this week and she was talking about her grade school teacher.  We had that same kind of upbringing with the small schoolhouse and the kids helped clean the chalkboard and erasers and raise the flag each morning.  It was a simpler time and my favorite teacher of all my schooling was Mrs. Hallie P. Skidmore.

She smoked like a freight train but never in front of us.  She had long fingernails that she kept painted red all the time.  We didn’t have pre-school or kindergarten when I was in school, we went straight to first grade.  When one of the kids had a loose tooth, Mrs. Skidmore would wash her hands, take us up on her lap and using those long fingernails she would pull our teeth.  Momma Said, “Try having that happen today, the parents would probably have a lawsuit against her!”

We didn’t think anything of it, that was just the way things were done.  We all helped each other, had great fun on the playground and never had to worry about sexual predators.  I am sure they were around but if they were found out they probably would have had a butt whoopin’ coming from every father in town.

It would be nice to have that time back again but the way things are going, the youth of today won’t even know what it is like to go to school, have a sleep over with your best friend, or even hug someone.  The world is revolving too fast for me, I need a time machine and just go back to when the world was a friendly place.  Momma Said, “I miss the innocence of my childhood.”
