DO YOU THINK IT WILL SNOW? I don’t know about you but I am definitely ready for it to stop. This is winter like I remember when we were kids. It would start snowing in October and snow until March. The almanac called for this to be a very severe winter and Momma Said, “I think they hit the nail on the head.”

I hope our readers in the Northeast are taking precautions to be safe and try to stay indoors. The Northwest has gotten their share of snow also. The cold is dangerous and if you have neighbors or friends that are shut-ins, please take the time to check on them.

Also take care of your pets in this weather. Keep a close check on the outside animals and make sure they have adequate water and shelter. Check on dogs feet if you walk them in areas with salt or other melting agents. Do not let them lick it off their feet. A very wise man by the name of Roger Caras summed it up completely when he said, “Dogs are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.”

To keep yourself safe, pack a survival duffle and keep in your vehicle. Items such as a complete change of clothes, (in case you are caught out in the weather and get wet), boots, gloves, a hat, matches, energy bars, hand and feet warmers, a space blanket, (the aluminum foil lightweight kind) and a flashlight.

A baggy filled with cotton balls dipped in vasoline is a good way to help start a fire if you are ever stuck and can’t get out. Also keep a bag of sand or kitty litter in your car in case you get stuck. It helps give a little traction on ice and snow. I hope you never have to use these items but Momma Said, “It is better to have and not need than to need and not have.”

I heard on the news that on January 7, 2014, all 50 states in the United States was below freezing. That included Hawaii with a temperature of 29 degrees. The Polar Vortex is responsible for the record low temperatures and the death toll continues to rise.

Gran always told us that the first 12 days of January will predict the weather for the whole year. Whatever each day brings is what the weather for each month will be like. It does not mean that if we had snow on Jan. 7 it will snow in July it means it will be a wet month. I do hope the weather warms up soon so we can have a nice year. After all this snow, spring will look mighty good this year.
