This is a photo of Davis High School. The site was donated by H G Davis and Stephen Elkins; school opened in 1903. It offered just a two year course and in 1912 it became a four year high school. The first school auditorium and four new classrooms were constructed in 1916. In 1922, the gymnasium was built; it was the only public gymnasium in the county at the time. It was replaced by a newer steel frame building with work beginning in 1940 and began being used in 1942. The school building was destroyed by fire Feb. 9, 1978. In 1955 Davis and Thomas High Schools were combined and became Mountaineer High School and school was held in Thomas. This was due to low enrollments. Then in 1963,everyone was moved to Davis due to unsafe conditions at the Thomas building. School continued in Davis as Mountaineer High School until the school burned in 1978.
