The Tucker County Board of Education met in regular session November 4, 2013.  All board members were present and following the call to order and the Pledge of Allegiance the Board moved on to delegations.  Having no delegation the Board moved on and approved an agenda adjustment.

The minutes of the October 21, 2013 work session and regular meeting were approved as presented.

The Board went on to approve the Memorandum of Understanding between West Virginia Department of Education, Regional Education Service Agencies, and County Boards of Education in response to Focus Designated Schools 2013-2017.  This now must be approved by the Faculty Senate.  This was due to T.V.E.M.S. being designated as a Focus School.  The school must now close the achievement gap between regular and special education students.  The status will remain with T.V.E.M.S. for three years and was based on a 2012’s test data.  Almost one hundred schools in West Virginia were given this same designation.

September’s financial reports were approved as presented.  Payroll check registers and Accounts Payable check registers were approved totaling over $362,000.00.

The Board went on approve the out-of-state travel and professional leave request of the Senior Class trip.  The seniors plan to go to Busch Gardens, Virginia along with a trip to celebrate the service of our military.  The cost is estimated to be $71,000.00.

The Board then went on to approve the intent to home-school Emily Siler.

First Energy of Rowlesburg, West Virginia was approved by the Board as a job shadow site.

The Board moved on to Committee Reports.

Marvin Parsons reported that the County Extension Agent is retiring.

Janet Preston reported that she attended the Faculty Senate Meeting at D.T.E.M.S. and brought before the Board some of their inquiries and requests, such as, an I.S.S. substitute one day every two weeks, if they are allowed to make students stay after school, and money for after school programs.

Jared Parsons reported that the Faculty Senate meeting at T.C.H.S. went well.

Janet Preston gave a report on a recent session the Board had attended where a speaker from the NSBA gave an address on improving your summer programs.  Preston made mention of the former local program, “5th Grade Connections” and if something like that could be re-started.

Tim Turner reported on a session where an address was given by the President of the West Virginia School Board Association concerning the fact that there is a push by some State Senators wanting to explore the feasibility and/or cost effectiveness of going from a fifty-five county school board system to a more combined system which would be run by the Governor’s or a Secretary of Education’s office.

Having no delegations pertaining to non-agenda items the Board moved on to Personnel.

The Board approved the resignations of both Barbara E. Miller, Preschool Aide at TVEMS and Karen Burns, Substitute Aide.

Having no further business to the regular meeting the Board adjourned.

Next meeting will be held at the Board of Education on Monday, November 18, 2013 at 6 p.m.

Anyone wishing to address the Board must register no later than 15 minutes prior to the commencement of the meeting  and presentations will be limited to five minutes per person.

For further information call the Board Office at 304-478-2771.
