GLENVILLE – The Tucker County Girls’ Basketball team traveled to Glenville State to face Class “AA” Nicholas County in the first round of the IOGA Tournament on Wednesday December 12th. The Lady Mt. Lions and the Lady Grizzlies battled back and forth the whole contest, but Nicholas County pulled away late in the fourth quarter to get the win over Tucker County by the final score of 59-50.
Nicholas County took the early lead, but Tucker County fought back to tie the score after one quarter of play 17-17. The Lady Grizzlies surged ahead in the second quarter as they outscored Tucker County 14-11 in the period to make the score 31-28 Nicholas County at the half.
The Lady Mt. Lions again fought back in the third as the score went back and forth throughout the stanza. The teams played to an even 11-11 in the quarter and Nicholas County led after three 42-39. Tucker County would not go away as they surged early in the fourth quarter, but Nicholas County responded late in the contest to outpace the Lady Mt. Lions 17-11 and the Lady Grizzlies pulled out the victory by the final score of 59-50.
McKinley Murphy led Tucker County in scoring with 12 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists. Katie Surguy added 11 points and Riley Evans chipped in with 9 points in the loss for the Lady Mt. Lions. Aliyah Plum pulled down 8 rebounds to lead Tucker County in rebounding.
GLENVILLE – The Lady Mt. Lions traveled back to Glenville State on Friday December 14th for an IOGA Tournament Consolation Game against Class “AA” Clay County. Tucker County trailed early, but the Lady Mt. Lions came back to take home the victory by the final score of 61-47.
Tucker County struggled to score early as they would trail after one quarter of play 17-11. Then the Lady Mt. Lions defense took over as they held Clay County to just 3 points in the second quarter and they outscored the Lady Panthers 11-3 to give Tucker County the lead at the halftime intermission 22-20.
In the third quarter the Lady Mt. Lions extended their lead as they outpaced Clay County 16-11 to make the score 38-31 Tucker County after three quarters of play. Tucker County again surged ahead in the fourth as they scored 23 points compared to the Lady Panthers 16 points in the final quarter to give Tucker County the victory by the final score of 61-47.
McKinley Murphy led the Lady Mt. Lions in scoring with 17 points, 3 steals, 3 assists and Aliyah Plum added 14 points, 12 rebounds. Riley Evans chipped in with 11 points for Tucker County in the win.
Tucker County will travel to Petersburg for a JV/Varsity contest on Thursday December 20th at 6pm. The Lady Mt. Lions will then travel to Elkins on Thursday December 27th for a varsity only contest at 5:45pm. For more info go to TuckerCountySports.Com.
