PAW PAW – The Mt. Lions Baseball team traveled to Paw Paw on Monday April 10th. In a back and forth game Tucker County pulled out the win by the final score of 7-5.
The Mt. Lions took a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning when Christian Purnell singled with 2 outs to bring home the runner to get the visiting team on the scoreboard first. Paw Paw scored 3 runs in the 5th inning to tie the score 3-3. Tucker County broke the tie in the top of the 6th inning to take the lead for good and went on to take the victory 7-5.
Shayne Liller earned the win on the mound for Tucker County as he went 6 and 1/3 innings surrendering 5 runs, 5 hits and he struck out 10 batters. Michael Gherman came in to get the last 2 outs of the game to collect the save for the Mt. Lions. Justin Fike and Christian Purnell collected 2 hits each to lead Tucker County in batting.
MOOREFIELD – Tucker County traveled to Moorefield for a double header on Tuesday April 11th. The home standing Yellowjackets came out firing on all cylinders to pick up the win in both games 28-0 and 7-0.
In the first contest Moorefield scored 11 runs in the 1st inning, 9 runs in the 2nd inning, 7 runs in the 3rd inning and 1 run in the 4th inning to take the contest 28-0. Tucker County managed just 1 hit in the game.
The second game of the night would not go much different for the Mt. Lions as they fell in the game 7-0 to give Moorefield the sweep. Tucker County again only managed just 1 hit. Michael Gherman and Christian Purnell had 1 hit each in the 2 games at Moorefield.
PARSONS – The Mt. Lions ended the busy week at home on Thursday April 13th in a double header with Pocahontas County. Tucker County fell in the first game 7-6 and took home the victory in the nightcap 16-5.
The Mt. Lions started the 1st game on offense with a bang as Shayne Liller drove the ball deep for a 3 run homerun in the 1st inning. Pocahontas County tied the game in the 5th inning 3-3 and then took a 7-3 lead in the 6th inning. Tucker County fought back in the 7th inning with 3 runs as Justin Fike doubled and Shayne Liller recorded a single, but the Mt. Lions came up short to drop the game 7-6. Fike took the loss on the mound for Tucker County as he pitched 6 and 1/3 innings. Tucker County collected 10 hits led by Shayne Liller who went 2 for 4 and 3 RBI’s.
In the 2nd game of the night the Mt. Lions got the bats going and early and never looked back. Tucker County exploded for 8 runs in the 1st inning with singles from Slayter Liller, Christian Purnell, Shane Humphrey, Josh Freeman, Michael Gherman and Justin Fike. Garrett Carrico earned the win for Tucker County as they never trailed in the contest and won the game 16-5. The Mt. Lions collected 18 hits in the game led by Michael Gherman, Shayne Liller and Christian Purnell as they all had 3 hits each. Tucker County stole 7 bases led by Justin Fike with 2 steals in the game.
Tucker County will return to action tonight April 19th at home against Tygarts Valley for a 5pm contest. The Mt. Lions will then host East Hardy for a double header on Thursday April 13th at 4:30pm and 5:30pm. Tucker County will then travel to Webster County for a Tournament on April 21st and 22nd.
