PHILIPPI – The Mt. Lions traveled to Philip-Barbour last Friday September 22nd. Tucker County trailed 7-6 at the half, but the home standing Colts scored 28 second half points to get the win over the Mt. Lions 35-6.
Tucker County won the coin toss and deferred their option until the second half. This gave Philip-Barbour the ball to start the game. The Colts could not move the ball on offense and were forced to punt after 3 plays. Tucker County did not have luck on their first possession either as Philip-Barbour intercepted the Luke Poling pass at the Colts 17. Philip-Barbour would then fumble the ball back to Tucker County which gave the ball to the Mt. Lions at the Colts 15. However, the offense for Tucker County could not capitalize as the drive stalled after 4 plays. The turnover bug would bite the home team again as Tucker County’s Gariet Pennington collected an interception with 3:33 left in the first quarter. The Mt. Lions would then get the offense moving as they drove the ball down the field and scored on a Poling to Ben Cromer touchdown pass from 12 yards out. The PAT kick failed to make the score 6-0 Tucker County with 2:01 left in the first quarter.
Philip-Barbour answered on their next drive as they capped off the drive with a 36 yard touchdown run with 11:52 left in the second quarter. Defense would dominate most of the second quarter as neither team could sustain drives. Then late in the quarter the Mt. Lions came up with another turnover on a Brett Reall interception at the Philip-Barbour 21 yard line. Tucker County drove the ball down to the 2 yard line, but the Mt. Lions were unable to score on a 4th down and goal. The Colts then went to work as time was running out on the first half. Philip-Barbour got down to the Tucker County 3 yard line, but the Colts were out of time outs and could not stop the clock before the first half expired. This left the score at the half 7-6 Philip-Barbour.
Tucker County received the kick to start the third quarter, but the Mt. Lions offense went 3 and out. The short punt gave the Colts the ball at the Tucker County 40. Philip-Barbour needed just 5 plays to drive 40 yards as the drive was finalized on a 2 yard touchdown run with 8:58 left in the third quarter. The PAT kick was good to push the Colts lead to 14-6. After another punt from the Mt. Lions, the home team got their offense moving again. The Colts drive would stall and they attempted a 43 yard field goal that was missed. Philip-Barbour would get the ball back after another 3 and out from Tucker County. The Colts would strike again on a 43 yard touchdown run with 3:12 left in the third. The PAT kick was good to make the score 21-6 Philip-Barbour.
The Mt. Lions would get their offense going at the beginning of the fourth. Tucker County drove the ball down the Colts 2 yard line but, the Mt. Lions could not get into the end zone again as the drive was stopped after the failed 4th down. Philip-Barbour would add a 10 yard touchdown run with 7:01 left in the fourth. Then the Colts added a 45 yard touchdown run with 5:12 left in the game to put the game out of reach and give Philip-Barbour the win at home 35-6.
Luke Poling led Tucker County with 9 of 16 passing for 108 yards and Ben Callaway had 5 receptions for 50 yards receiving. Jordan Moss and Ben Callaway each had 24 yards receiving for Tucker County in the loss. Philip-Barbour was led by Joseph Collier with 174 yards rushing.
