TUCKER COUNTY GIRLS CAPTURE REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP 66-28

HAMBLETON – The Lady Mt. Lions hosted Notre Dame for the Regional Championship on Wednesday February 28th at Tucker County High School. Tucker County never trailed in route to an easy 66-28 victory to secure the 14th straight trip to the WV Girls’ Basketball State Tournament.


The Lady Mt. Lions got the offense moving half way through the first quarter as they went on a 10-0 run to end the first quarter to give Tucker County the 14-3 lead over the Lady Irish after one quarter of play. Tucker County continued their run in the second quarter as the Lady Mt. Lions went on a 14-0 run to start the second and outscored Notre Dame 21-3 in the second to push the Tucker County lead to 35-6 at the halftime intermission.

Tucker County scored the first 8 points of the third quarter, but they cooled off to hold a 12-11 advantage at the end of three to make the score 47-17 Lady Mt. Lions after three. The Tucker County reserve players finished off the fourth quarter and outshot Notre Dame 19-11 to make the final score 66-28 Tucker County.

The Lady Mt. Lions were led in scoring by Sydney Nestor with 13 points and Sydney Moore added 10 points as well. Dominique Meadows, Terra Kuhn and Riley Evans netted 8 points each and Cecily Strawderman chipped in 7 points for Tucker County in the win. Nestor added 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals and Kuhn had 7 rebounds for the Lady Mt. Lions while Meadows also gathered 7 boards for Tucker County. Cecily Strawderman and McKinley Murphy each had 5 of the Tucker County 18 steals on the night. Moore would also pull down 5 rebounds for Tucker County in the victory.

Tucker County(23-1) will face Magnolia on Thursday morning March 8th at 9:30am in the first round of the WV Girls’ Basketball State Tournament inside the Charleston Civic Center. The Tucker County / Magnolia winner will play in the Semi-Finals on Friday March 9th at 11:15 am against the winner of the Wheeling Central / Trinity game. The Class “A” Championship Game will be played on Saturday March 10th at 2:30pm. Audio coverage for all the State Tournament games can be found on wvmetronews.com.
