TUCKER COUNTY GIRLS’ ENDS REGULAR SEASON WITH 2 WINS

HAMBLETON – The Lady Mt. Lions hosted East Hardy on Monday February 12th for varsity only contest. Tucker County jumped out to a quick start and never looked back as they cruised to a 73-23 win.


Both team started the game slow, but Tucker County got the scoring going late in the first quarter to lead East Hardy after one 12-3. The Lady Mt. Lions continued their scoring in the second as they outpaced the Lady Cougars 23-6 in the second quarter to make the halftime score 35-9 Tucker County.

In the third quarter Tucker County’s Sydney Nestor surpassed former Boys’ player LJ Gravelle to become the All-Time leading scorer Boys’ or Girls’ in TCHS History. The mark of 1626 points that Gravelle set back in 2008 was the point total Nestor exceeded.

The Lady Mt. Lions outscored East Hardy in the third quarter 15-6 to push the Tucker County lead to 50-15 after three quarters. The reserve players took over for the Lady Mt. Lions in the fourth and outshot the Lady Cougars 23-8 to make the final score 73-23 Tucker County.

Sydney Nestor led Tucker County with 20 points, 12 rebounds, 7 steals and Sydney Moore added 12 points, 5 steals. Cecily Strawderman and McKinley Murphy had 10 points each and Dominique Meadows pulled down 6 rebounds for Tucker County in the win.

HAMBLETON – The Tucker County Girls’ Basketball team hosted top 10 opponent Pocahontas County on Thursday February 15th. The Lady Mt. Lions got off to a slow start, but Tucker County exploded in the third quarter to increase the lead as they took home the victory 63-34.

Tucker County had trouble getting the ball to fall into the basket in the first quarter, but the Lady Mt. Lions defense was solid as Tucker County led 8-3 after one quarter of play. Pocahontas County fought back in the second quarter, but a late run from Tucker County allowed the home team to outscore the Lady Warriors 19-13 in the second to make the halftime score 27-16 Tucker County.

The Lady Mt. Lions defense continued to show the way in the third quarter as Tucker County outscored Pocahontas County 21-10 in the third to give Tucker County a 48-26 lead after three. A 15-8 advantage by the Lady Mt. Lions put the game out of reach for the Lady Warriors and gave Tucker County the win by the final score of 63-34.

Terra Kuhn and McKinley Murphy led Tucker County with 13 points each. Kelcee James added 11 points, 11 rebounds for the Lady Mt. Lions and Sydney Moore and Cecily Strawderman chipped in with 10 points each. Strawderman also had 4 steals and 4 assists for the Lady Mt. Lions in the win. The Tucker County JV team got the win in the first contest 52-40. The Lady Mt. Lions JV team finished the season with a 9-3 record.

Tucker County(20-1) will start Sectional Playoffs on Thursday February 22nd as they will host the winner of the Harman/Pendleton County contest.
