The Heart of the Highlands Trail System will hold its 8th Annual Stakeholders Meeting on Monday, December 5 at 6 p.m. at the National Youth Science Center. Everyone interested in using and connecting trails on public lands in Tucker County – especially in the Canaan Valley, Davis and Thomas areas – is welcome to attend and celebrate our accomplishments.
Heart of the Highlands (HoH) recently completed the new Blackwater View Trail – 4000’ of new trail in cooperation with a private land owner and the Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge – to cross the Blackwater River and connect Refuge trails near Cortland Road with those in the heart of Canaan Valley and north of Timberline.
The primary focus of HoH is to build, connect, and improve existing trails to link trail systems on the public lands in and around Canaan Valley to each other, and to the Town of Davis. HoH public land partners include: Blackwater Falls State Park, Little Canaan Wildlife Management Area, Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge, Canaan Valley State Park, and Monongahela National Forest. HoH also has private partnerships with First Energy and the National Youth Science Foundation, as well as private land owners, to legally connect trails for public access.
