Ben Flanagan, WV HOSA State President and Tucker County HOSA’s President, participated in the Fifth Annual Washington Leadership in Academy in Washington, D.C., September 21-24. HOSA is Health Occupations Students of America, a career and technical education student-led organization.

The Washington Leadership Academy is a gathering of state leaders to build awareness for HOSA in Washington, D.C. with national and state leaders, provide networking opportunities with other state HOSA leaders and equip state officers with the skills necessary to better lead and advocate for HOSA in their home state.

Located in the nation’s capitol, The Washington Leadership Academy provided opportunities to experience leadership training, see historic Washington, D.C. and spend a day on Capitol Hill meeting with Congressional Representatives. Approximately 250 delegates attended the four-day event.

The training focused on courage and being courageous leaders. Delegates were divided into teams for the leadership sessions. Each team was given a monument to represent during their sessions.

The most memorable tours were the Courage Tour of D.C., the Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown at the Arlington National Cemetery, and the tour National Museum of Health and Medicine and National Institute of Health.
