Visitors to Tucker Valley Elementary Middle School may have thought they stepped onto the set of Survivor the week of May 5th, that is because the school was participating in a series of Survivor style games for Teacher Appreciation Week, according to staff member Dale Lansberry.
Lansberry reached out to the Parsons Advocate during Teacher Appreciation Week as part of one of his “challenges” to discuss what has been happening at the school.
“Its nice when you start thinking about your coworkers and send them a letter or send them something,” Lansberry said.
As part of Teacher Appreciation Week, the school has been participating in a series of challenge games that consist of spinning a wheel and having to complete the task assigned. Some challenges may consist of relatively simple or silly tasks, while others center on lifting the spirits of others through anonymous acts of kindness.
When asked to spin the wheel, this reporter landed on a challenge to “Explain Schrodinger’s cat to Mrs Falls.”
Lansberry said that events such as Teacher Appreciation Week occur throughout the year. According to Lansberry a similar event happened around Christmas, as well. Lansberry said TVEMS Principal Buck Helmick designs and administers the games and events for the staff.
“This is his second, third year and when we hired him, the whole atmosphere changed in this school,” Lansberry said. “He does a really good job. He comes up with some fun stuff to do.”
It is not only the staff that gets involved with the fun during Teacher Appreciation Week. Lansberry said that the students ask about the festivities and are curious about what is happening. On Friday, the School hosted “Students Got Talent,” a talent show designed for the students to have some fun prior and get them “pumped up” before their “Summit of Assessments,” a big testing week, the week following.
Besides the games, the staff were treated to pizza, baked goods, business donations and other shows of appreciation throughout the week. The week ended with a business presenting staff with drinks on Friday.
“I bet there’s no other schools doing this besides us,” Lansberry said.
