Martha Helen Gasser Nichols

Martha Helen Gasser Nichols, 85, of Davis, WV died on November 27, 2013 at Garrett County Memorial Hospital. She was born in Pierce, WV on January 16, 1928, the daughter of the late Sebastian and Mary Gardner Gasser. She attended grade school in Pierce and graduated from Thomas High School in 1945. She graduated from the University of Maryland with an R.N. degree.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, J. Pat Nichols of Davis, and her six children, Pat A. and Linda Nichols of Davis, Kevin P. Nichols of Deep Creek, MD, Cullen C. Nichols of Thomas, Robert S. and Sheri Nichols of Davis, Mary V. and Dan Leavitt of Aledo, TX and Shawn O. and Kathy Nichols of Parsons. She is also survived by her sisters and brother, Mary Chmura of Moosup, CT, Jeannie Dover of Worland, WY and Rudolph Gasser of Chardon, OH. Martha had 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Tina Repetsky and Antonia Harrison.

She was a volunteer at Cortland Acres Nursing Home for more than 25 years. She served patients in Randolph, Tucker and Preston Counties for many years as a home health nurse. She was an avid reader and loved to travel. She also was a member of the Canaan Valley Women’s Club and the Society of St. Thomas Women and served on the board of the Mountaintop Library. She was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. Martha was a dedicated volunteer in the community and will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Friends were received on Friday November 29, 2013 at Hinkle Funeral Home from 2 until 8 p.m. Rosary was held at 7 p.m.. Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday November 30 at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church with Father Timothy Grassi as celebrant. Interment followed in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Expressions of sympathy in Martha’s honor may be made to Friends of Cortland Acres, 39 Cortland Lane, Thomas, WV 26292. Hinkle Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
