Paul R. Mateer Jr., 90, of Oakland, Maryland went home on Wednesday, March 1, 2023, to be with his Heavenly Father. Paul was born on April 27, 1932, and was the oldest child of Paul R. Mateer Sr. and Ruth Flanigan Mateer. Paul Jr., as he was called, was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Jane Cotton.

Paul was a 1950 graduate of Parsons High School and a 1960 graduate of WVU School of Forestry. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War and was proud to be able to attend college on the GI Bill. He moved to Garrett County, Maryland with his wife, Willetta, and son, “Rick”, in 1961 when he joined the Maryland Department of Natural Resources as a Project Forester. He was also a member of the Maryland Christmas Tree Growers Association. He also had a landscaping and tree trimming business and helped his wife, Willetta, with her CPA business. After retirement Paul and Willetta enjoyed traveling, taking train and boat cruise excursions.

He is survived by his love of 65 years, Willetta (Wythe) Mateer; two sons, Paul Richard and his wife Leslie of Charleston, WV, and Mark Stanley and his wife Julia of Lakewood Ranch, FL; and his daughter, Mary Beth Cummings and husband Tom of Oakland, MD. Paul is also survived by his nine grandchildren, Bethanie Mateer and husband Zach Coakley of Hico, WV, Sarah Martin and husband Christian of Bruceton Mills, WV, Daniel Mateer and wife Allison of Morgantown, WV, Joseph Mateer and wife Shawna of Ellenton FL, Phillip Mateer of Bradenton, FL , Caroline Magana and husband Carlos of Bradenton, FL, Elizabeth Callis and husband Ian Irvine, Aaron Callis and Haley Oliphant of Elkins, WV, and Anna Callis of Gaithersburg, MD; seven great grandchildren, Landon Coakley, Owen Coakley, Grace Mateer, Jack Mateer, Ella Mateer, Christian Martin and Gretchen Martin; and a sister, Sue Ager of Berwick, PA.

Friends were received at the C & S Fredlock Funeral, P.A., 21 N 2nd St., Oakland on Friday, March, 3, 2023, from 4 to 7 p.m. A funeral service was held at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 318 E Oak St., Oakland on Saturday, March 4, 2023, at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery with military honors accorded by the combined honor guard of the American Legion Proctor Kildow Post #71 and the Deer Park VFW Post #10077.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to Landon’s Library and Garrett Lakes Arts Festival, in honor of Paul Mateer.

The C & S Fredlock Funeral Home is honored to be serving the Mateer family.
