Philip Craig Steyer, 84, of Canaan Valley, WV, passed away on January 31, 2023, surrounded by family after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.  Born on April 21, 1938, in Cumberland, MD, he was the son of the late Leon Datesman Steyer and Velma (Corrick) Steyer.

Philip was a graduate of Davis High School, where he was a member of the band and the basketball team. He served in United States Air Force from 1961-1965, during which time he traveled to Texas, Kansas, Montana and Alaska.  Prior to leaving for the Air Force, he married Jean Elizabeth (Payne) Steyer on May 1, 1959.  He worked as a maintenance supervisor for IBM in Washington DC and Manassas, Virginia.  After retirement, he drove the school bus for Fauquier County, VA, and then returned as a maintenance supervisor at Airlie, in Warrenton, VA.  In his spare time, he enjoyed watching Nascar, the Washington Redskins and the Washington Nationals.  He had a passion for the outdoors, adventures and just enjoyed having fun. One of his favorite things was getting together every summer for a few days with his childhood friends from school days for “ramp camp” and spending time reminiscing. He loved his family, friends, and hometown of Davis, WV.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jean Elizabeth (Payne) Steyer; a daughter, Shannon Stickley and husband Troy of Sudlersville, MD; a son, Michael Steyer and wife Alicia Juliet of Jeffersonton, VA; three grandchildren, Catherine and husband Jay Buhl, Makayla, and Mason Donald Craig Steyer; three great-grandchildren, Memphis Rice, Elijah, and Jurnee Buhl; and a sister, Nancy Steyer Marcum.

Philip’s wishes to be cremated were honored. Friends will be received May 20, 2023, from 3 to 5 PM at Hinkle-Fenner Funeral Home, 567 Thomas Avenue, Davis. A celebration of life will be held at 5 PM in the funeral home with Pastor Bob Yothers officiating.  The Hinkle-Fenner Funeral Home is honored to be serving the Steyer family at this time.
