Ward Sponaugle, age 90 years, a resident of Parsons, WV departed this life Saturday morning July 3, 2021, at the Elkins Rehabilitation & Care Center at Elkins, WV.  He had been in declining health although death was unexpected.

He was born Saturday, March 14, 1931, at Oceola, WV, a son of the late Kennie and Ellie Vandevender Sponaugle.  He was twice married.  First to the former Verna Vandevender, who preceded him in death.  On March 14, 1978, at Oakland, MD, he was married to the former Agnes Virginia Bates, who preceded him in death February 14, 2005.

Surviving are two sons, Leonard Ward Sponaugle and wife Cindy of Whitmer and Leon Ray Sponaugle and wife Trudy of Dry Fork; two daughters, Lillian Coontz and husband Dale of Louisa, VA and Margaret Miller and husband Mike of Tarpon Springs, FL; one sister, Marie Bennett of Kerens; nine grandchildren; Anthony Sponaugle, Andrea Adamson, Erica Dixon, Travis Coontz, Nick Miller, Kevin Miller, Murlin Howell, II, Amanda Nucilli and Matthew Sponaugle; eighteen great grandchildren, Dylan and Alex Partlow, Katie Howell, Dustin and Emily Sponaugle, David, Bailey and Zoe Dixon, Maddison Starr, Mateo Nucilli, Lance Adamson, Keegan, Lukas and Lilah Miller, Dezyl, Axzyl, Rocco and Slayd Miller and Arianna Stanganelli.

Preceding him in death are one daughter, Nancy Howell; two brothers, Elmer Sponaugle and Sun Ray Sponaugle; and one sister, Geraldine Sponaugle.

He attended school in Pendleton County.  He retired from the Hinchcliff Lumber Co., after twenty-five years of service.  He enjoyed listening to Christian music and loved talking on the phone to his children. Ward was a kind, caring and humble person with a heart of gold, and he was a blessing to all that knew him. Ward’s greatest wish was for his grandchildren to be saved.

The family received friends at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home of Parsons, WV on Tuesday, July 6, 2021, from 5 to 7 p.m.  Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home on Wednesday, July 7, 2021, at 11 a.m.  The Rev. Terry Burgess will officiate and interment will follow at the Mountain State Memorial Gardens at Gilman.  The Lohr & Barb Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements for Ward Sponaugle.  Condolences may be expressed to the family at www.lohrbarbfuneralhome.com
