A state-accredited nursing program in the Potomac Highlands is accepting applications through January 31 from area residents interested in studying nursing to prepare for a career as a Registered Nurse (RN). Eastern WV Community and Technical College will admit 20 students to its nursing class of 2016, with courses starting in the fall semester of 2014.

Eastern’s two-year classroom and clinical training program leads to an Associate in Applied Science degree in Nursing, and qualifies graduates to take the national licensing exam.

Learners interested in the nursing classes can pick up the necessary application at Eastern’s Moorefield center at 316 Eastern Drive, off Corridor H, about 2 miles east of Route 220; or download it from Eastern’s website (www.easternwv.edu/nursing). The website also provides additional information about program admissions requirements and standards.

Applicants must have achieved a minimum overall GPA of 2.5 in all previous college courses, and all applications must include an official copy of transcript(s)—in sealed envelopes—from all colleges and universities attended, other than Eastern. No applications will be accepted after 4:30 pm, January 31.

The admission process requires applicants to take the HESI (Health Education Systems, Inc.) pre-entrance exam. Testing will take place Saturday, March 8, 2014 at 9:00 a.m., in Eastern’s Moorefield center. All applications must also include a check or money order payable to “EWVCTC” in the amount of $50.00 for the non-refundable entrance exam registration fee.

The program uses a point system to make admissions selections (see application), and the scores required depend on the quality of the applicant pool. Applicants who state that they deserve points as listed on the application must provide documentation with the application.

“I strongly encourage those who are interested in the program to submit an application,” said Eleanor Berg, Eastern’s nursing program, director, “and not to be discouraged by the large number of applicants we had for the last cohort.

For more information about Eastern’s Nursing program, and its requirements, contact Berg by email (eberg@eastern.wvnet.edu ), or call 304-530-5130; or toll free 877-982-2322.

Eastern graduated its first class of nurses two years ago, and all graduates quickly passed the NCLEX national licensing exam. Within three months after passing the exam, they all found jobs. Eastern’s current nursing class will graduate this May.

The WV Board of Examiners for Registered Professional Nurses formally gave full state accreditation to Eastern’s nursing program March 21, 2013.

For more information about Eastern’s financial aid opportunities, programs of study, workforce training and community education and events, call toll free: 877-982-2322; or check the College’s website: “www.easternwv.edu”.
