Elkins – The Davis & Elkins College Department of Sport Science is gearing up for its second year of Project Life Change, a free community program that offers a variety of ways for area residents to improve their health. New this year is the inclusion of the latest in pedometer technology to allow participants to track their activity.

The 16-week session begins August 26 with sign-ups at 5:30 p.m. and an introduction to the program at 6 p.m. in Eshleman Science Center room 400. Additional classes will be conducted each Tuesday at 6 p.m. through December 9.

“This year we’ve expanded upon what we will be offering to the participants,” says D&E Sport Science Instructor Mandi Larkin. “If anyone has been struggling with health and wellness issues and is looking for ways to improve, this is an excellent choice.”

The Davis & Elkins Department of Sport Science has teamed up with ibitz by GeoPalz to offer participants the choice of using the wireless pedometers. No special technology skills are needed. “All they have to do is wear it and we’ll handle everything else,” Larkin says.

In addition to Larkin, other members of the Department of Sport Science working with the program are Department Chair and Assistant Athletic Director Dr. Mary Ann DeLuca and Instructor of Physical Education Jennifer Riggleman.

During the weekly program sessions, participants discuss a variety of health and wellness topics led by the department staff and invited speakers. Some themes planned include nutrition and cooking, exercise equipment and techniques, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and surviving the holidays.

The Department of Sport Science recently received a $3,500 grant from Snowshoe Foundation allowing the program to continue completely free of charge. In addition to the class sessions, participants will be given a pass for access to Robbins-Madden Fitness Center and George A. Myles Pool on the College campus, and the fitness area and classes at Elkins/Randolph County YMCA.

Last year, the 33 people who completed the program lost a combined total of 207 pounds, with an average weight loss of 7.1 pounds per person. They also reported an increased awareness of their food choices, portion size and activity level.

Pre-registration is recommended, but not required, by calling Larkin at 304-637-1222 or emailing larkina@dewv.edu.
