Tucker County’s golf team hit the road last week for a varsity and junior varsity matchup against Pendleton County at scenic Fisher Mountain. The varsity match featured an exciting twist — a matchplay four-ball format, giving the Mountain Lions a rare opportunity to compete in this style of play. Despite the thrill of the format, Tucker County ultimately fell to Pendleton 2-1.
The duo of Drew Simmons and Nate Davis took an early lead on the first hole thanks to a birdie from Simmons, but Pendleton responded on the second hole to even the match. The contest remained tight until the final stretch. The turning point came on the penultimate hole, where Davis hit the green 12 feet out. The steady par secured the hole and gave Tucker County a one-up lead heading to the ninth. On the final hole, Simmons safely played into the left rough, allowing Davis to attack the pin. He delivered with a spectacular drive that landed just eight feet from the cup on the short par-four. After Pendleton carded a par, Davis needed three putts to clinch the win, but completed the task in two, sealing the two-up victory for the Mountain Lions. This would be the only duo team for Tucker to claim a win for the match.
Davis, Simmons, and Cayden Arnold all posted team-best scores of 42 in the contest. On the JV side, Tucker County also fell to Pendleton, though freshman Jarrett Dearborn stood out with a solid round of 47.
The Mountain Lions will hit the road next week for an eight-team match at the Clarksburg Country Club on Monday, Sept. 28.
