You don’t have to be AARP age to get Colon Cancer

THOMAS. W.Va. – Garrett Surgical Group and Cortland Acres have partnered to host an informational discussion titled, ‘You don’t have to be AARP age to get Colon Cancer.’
The discussion will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30 in the Gathering Room at the new Blackwater Short-term Rehabilitation Center. Dr. Stephen P. Bayuk, D.O., board certified general surgeon and on the medical staff at Garrett Regional Medical Center, is the featured speaker.
Garrett Surgical Group recently opened a satellite office for patients in the Cortland Medical Specialties building on Cortland’s campus near the Rehabilitation Center. The two facilities work closely together.
During the discussion Dr. Bayuk will explain the prep and Colonoscopy procedures along with American Cancer Society’s guidelines on who should have a Colonoscopy.
Participants will learn who should have a Colonoscopy and at what age; what happens during a Colonoscopy; the benefits of having a Colonoscopy; the preparation required before the Colonoscopy; and the guidelines used for determining follow up Colonoscopies.
Additionally, participants will learn about what happens when a polyp is found and the different types of polyps and what a person can do to improve their chances of preventing Colon Cancer.
The program is open to anyone and light refreshments will be served. People will be able to ask questions throughout the program.
