The Tucker County High School (TCHS) golf team competed in the Class A Region II tournament at Canaan Valley Resort Golf Club on Monday. Each team was limited to four golfers, with the team score determined by the three lowest individual scores. The top two teams advanced to the two-day State Golf Championship at Oglebay Resort on Oct. 14-15. Additionally, the top two individual golfers who were not members of qualifying teams earned spots in the state tournament.
Heading into the regional tournament, the Tucker County team was optimistic about its chances of advancing to the state tournament. However, despite Tucker’s consistent performance leading up to the event, the team struggled to find its rhythm on the course. The Mountain Lions finished with a team score of 262, just five strokes behind second-place Tygarts Valley. Tucker County finished 14 strokes behind regional champion Pendleton County High School, which recorded its best round of the season at a crucial time.
Despite narrowly missing out on team qualification, Tucker County celebrated two individual qualifiers. Seniors Nate Davis and Drew Simmons both earned spots in the State Golf Championship for the second consecutive year. Davis finished third overall with a score of 83, while Simmons placed fifth with an 85. Their performances secured their return to the state tournament and gave Tucker County two representatives at the championship.
Davis and Simmons are scheduled to tee off Wednesday between 9:10 and 9:20 a.m. as they begin their first rounds at Oglebay Resort. Community members can follow their progress through the WVSSAC Golf app or by visiting iWanamaker.com and searching for the WVSSAC Class A State Championship.
